gaza city from the central area in gaza city toward israel. a number of those rockets have been intercepted. it's not clear how many may have gotten through this evening alone. there's a lot to tell you about today. most significantly a big strike on a building just several blocks from here that houses a number of media organizations, local media and also some foreign media organizations. it's a building that was struck on sunday and had largely been evacuated. but today the building was struck. again, the lower floors were struck again. one member of islamic jihad was said to be killed. that's confirmed by israeli and palestinian sources. a lot to tell you about. here's what the day looked like. >> reporter: day six of the battle between hamas and israeli defense forces. day six rockets crisscrossing the border. despite efforts to broker a cease-fire, the spector of the israeli ground invasion is still very real. this strike occurred around 2:00 a.m. when we were live. also two media centers -- whoa! that was a rather large explosion. that occurred -- let me just look out here

being fired from gaza city toward israel and we saw israel's iron dome air defense system actually take out some of those rockets in midair. so it doesn't seem like they actually reached across the border into israel and actually land in israel. we've seen explosions really over the last several hours, though not as active as we saw last night, but it was a very busy day here in gaza, a day -- deadly day as well. take a look. attack if the order comes. israel's cabinet has authorized the call-ups of up to 75,000 reservists. a member of israel's government who is not aligned with prime minister netanyahu's coalition, said the violence seems to be beyond control, end quote. the u.s. state department is calling it a very dangerous situation. president obama talked to the leaders of israel and egypt and we are told secretary of state clinton has been working the phones trying to muster international pressure to diffuse the situation rockets have been flying both ways. that was an israeli missile strike right there in gaza. israel is aiming at terrorist targets and that's what it looks and sounds like from a distance. here it is up close during an interview with ani israeli and palestinian who are in the thick of it. >> let me jump in there, mohammed. when you hear him describe the situation where he is, what goes through your mind? >> sorry. that is one thing. carry on with your question. misspoke and said there were no more hospitals in manhattan open. i forgot about beth israel. which is down at the lower eve east side. so there is one. la guardia will open tomorrow. that's the good news. as for the limited subway service that resumes tomorrow in new york, there in new york, no trains will be running south of 34th street, an area that includes, of course, the financial district. sandy's crippled the nation's biggest transit system. some stations remain under water right now. there's catastrophic damage to underground tracks and equipment. the mta says it is too early to tell when full service will return or if every subway line can be fixed. some of them may be beyond repair. millions of riders depend on the subway each day, all of us in the city. a few commuter train lines went into service this afternoon. for the most part, commuters relied on buses, on cars, on cabs if they could get them and gouged for prices on the cabs. there is gridlock as bad as we have ever seen in manhattan. look at this. this is columbus circle south of central park on the west side earlier toda
